Is Your High-Mileage Car Worth Fixing?

High mileage doesn't mean it's done. Here's how to tell if your car still has life in it — and when it's time to move on.

Mileage Is Just a Number

In Zimbabwe, many vehicles on the road have 200,000+ km. A well-maintained engine doesn't suddenly die at a magic number. How the car was maintained matters far more than the odometer reading.

A Toyota Hilux with 350,000 km and full service history is a better bet than a BMW 3 Series with 120,000 km and no records.

Probably Worth Fixing

Reliable Make & Model

Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Mazda engines are built to last. A well-maintained Corolla at 300,000 km can have years of life left.

Good Service History

Regular oil changes, timing belt replacements, and scheduled maintenance mean the engine and drivetrain have been protected.

Single System Failure

If only one major system needs attention (e.g., clutch or suspension), the repair extends the car's life significantly.

Structurally Sound

No major rust, no accident damage, no chassis issues. The body and frame are the hardest things to fix.

Probably Not Worth It

Multiple System Failures

Engine, transmission, AND suspension all need work? The combined cost likely exceeds the car's value.

Structural Rust

Rust on subframes, floor pans, or structural members is dangerous and expensive to repair properly.

No Service History

Unknown maintenance history on a high-mileage car is a major risk. You don't know what's been neglected.

Repeated Breakdowns

If the car has been in the workshop 3+ times in 6 months for different issues, it's telling you something.
